Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're new to water softeners or have been using one for many years, we're often asked similar questions about hard water, water softeners and Aquasol Tablet Salt. We've answered some of the most common questions below to help you get the best performance from your water softener.

What is hard water?

Hard water contains naturally dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium. These minerals cause limescale, reduce the effectiveness of soaps and detergents, and can shorten the life of household appliances.

What does a water softener do?

A water softener removes calcium and magnesium ions from the water and replaces them with sodium ions using an ion-exchange resin.

Why does my water softener need salt?

The salt regenerates the resin inside the softener so it can continue removing hardness minerals.

Can I use any type of salt?

Water softeners should only be used with high-purity tablet or block salt recommended by the manufacturer.Aquasol Tablet Salt is manufactured specifically for water softeners.

How often will I need to add salt?

This depends on:

household size, water hardness, water usage, softener size

Most households check their salt level every few weeks.

How do I know when to refill?

Never allow the salt level to fall completely below the water level inside the brine tank.

Why has my salt formed a bridge?

Sometimes salt forms a hard crust across the top of the tank leaving a cavity underneath. This is known as salt bridging and prevents the softener regenerating correctly. A major problem with granular salt

What is soft water?

Soft water contains very little calcium or magnesium.

It helps reduce limescale and allows soaps and detergents to work much more effectively.

Can softened water be used for drinking?

Yes, most healthy adults can safely drink softened water. However, softened water contains more sodium than hard water.

For infants on formula, people following medically prescribed low-sodium diets or certain kidney conditions, an unsoftened drinking water supply is often recommended. If in doubt, seek advice from your doctor or water supplier.

Can I cook with softened water?

Yes, many people do.

However, some households prefer an unsoftened kitchen cold tap for drinking and cooking.

What is a reverse osmosis (RO) system?

A reverse osmosis system removes a very high proportion of dissolved minerals and impurities.

Many homeowners install one beneath the kitchen sink to provide purified drinking water from a dedicated tap.

Should I install an RO system?

If you want exceptionally low-mineral drinking water, a point-of-use reverse osmosis system is an excellent companion to a whole-house water softener.

The water softener protects the RO membrane from limescale, helping to extend its service life.

Does softened water taste salty?

Normally no.

Properly softened water should not taste salty.

Does softened water damage plants?

Most houseplants and garden plants prefer rainwater or unsoftened water.

Can softened water be used in kettles?

Absolutely.

One of the biggest advantages is dramatically reduced limescale in all appliences
